God’s Future Plan for the Jews and Israel The Rejection of the Jews is not Total or Final and the Inclusion of the Gentiles as God’s People should produce Humility, Fear and Gratitude
I. Brief Review
A. Paul’s “radical” doctrine of salvation (Chapters 1 through 8 )
- The Gospel is the power of God for salvation…for Jew and Gentile alike (1:16)
- All men, both Jew and Gentile, are under God’s condemnation and wrath (2:9-12, 3:22b & 23)
- The Law cannot save: Salvation, for both Jews and Gentiles, is by Justification which comes by God’s righteous Grace alone, thru Faith alone, in Christ alone (3:24 thru 5:21)
- Justification produces Sanctification thru the work of the Holy Spirit for both Jew and Gentile (6:1 thru 8:39)
B. The Jew – Gentile problem: Can God be trusted? Does God really keep his promises?
- God had chosen Israel, not Gentiles (Deut. 7:6-11 & Jer. 31:33)
- Paul understands and laments the condition of his kinsmen, that they had rejected Jesus, God’s messiah (9:1-5)
- Paul gives the answer to the dilemma (9:6-8)
- God, for His own Glory, as He always has, chooses or elects or selects those (i.e., “children of the promise”), both Jew and Gentile, who will be Justified, and He is not unfair in doing so (9:9 thru 9:29)
C. Israel’s unbelief is the immediate or proximate reason for their rejection by God as well as is the Gentile’s belief, which is the immediate or proximate reason, for their acceptance by God (9:30-10:21)
II. God has not rejected His people whom He chose (elected) both Jew and Gentile (11:1-32)
A. There is a Remnant of Israel (11:1-10)
- I’m a Jew (11:1-2)
- God’s answer to Elijah (11:3-6)
- Elect Israel obtained the promise (11:7-10)
B. The Gentiles are grafted in (11:11-24)
- Israel’s disobedience means salvation for the Gentiles
- Inclusion of the Gentiles is to make the Jews jealous
- Gentiles must take care not to become arrogant or proud but instead humble and thankful
C. The mystery of Israel’s salvation (11:25-32)
- A partial hardening of Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles
- God’s gifts and calling are irrevocable
- God’s mercy to Jews and Gentiles
III. Paul’s Doxology (11:33-36)
A. There is no one like God (11:33-35)
B. Soli Deo Gloria (11:36)

C. Theme: Romans is a grand treatise on the Gospel – God’s grace and mercy in salvation for Jew and Gentile (1:16)
D. Importance: Chapters 9 through 11 are the heart or foundation of salvation in Romans (and all of scripture)
II. The Jew – Gentile problem (a concern for all of us): Can God be trusted? Does God really keep his promises?
A. Paul’s radical & mysterious gospel – (Eph 3:1-6, 2 Ptr. 3:15-16)
B. God had chosen Israel, not Gentiles – (Deut. 7:6-11)
C. Paul’s serious challenge in Chaps. 1-8 to long held beliefs

C. Paul’s explanation from the Scriptures
- Isaac, not Ishmael (9:7-9) (see figure 1)

- Conclusion: some final nails in the coffin (9:25-29)
‘Tis not that I did choose Thee,
For, Lord, that could not be,
This heart would still refuse Thee,
But Thou hast chosen me:
Thou from the sin that stained me
Washed me and set me free,
And to this end ordained me,
That I should live to Thee.” (hymn by Josiah Condor, 1856)
